On May 18th and 19th, 2012, the Understanding Language team shared our work at a Seattle conference of the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS). We presented preliminary prototypes of several resources currently under production, including a framework for the development of English language proficiency and a working draft of instructional principles for teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs).
In addition, we presented two workshops exploring these ideas in the areas of English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. In the first of these, Lydia Stack introduced the audience to a draft instructional unit, currently under development, that exemplifies effective teaching strategies for ELLs in ELA. We are seeking CGCS member districts to help review this unit during the month of June, prior to its public release. In the second workshop, Phil Daro and Harold Asturias discussed the language challenges and opportunities that ELLs face in the shift toward the Common Core in mathematics.
Selected materials from these workshops can be downloaded at right, including presentation slides and a current draft of the Understanding Language instructional principle
