Spring 2014 MOOC Series

Monday, February 3, 2014

We are pleased to inform you that Understanding Language will be offering several free online courses (MOOCs) through Stanford Online starting in March.  The focus of these courses will be to support the language demand of the new standards.

A pair of courses (one with a geared for elementary teachers, the other for secondary) will be about constructive classroom conversations. These courses build on a successful pilot of the course that we offered last fall, in which over 2,000 teachers participated, and 521 completed requirements leading to a statement of accomplishment (many districts provided professional development credits based on our statement). Teachers may take these courses as individuals, but several large school districts around the country have already contacted us about ways to involve their coaches in facilitating teams of teachers, which we encourage districts to do. These courses will start on March 6, 2014. Please follow the links to register:

Another course will focus on uses of language in elementary mathematics. In addition to student discourse, this course will also focus on how students engage with text and writing in math. This course will start on March 26. Please follow the link to register:
