Maria Santos will discuss the knowledge and resources that support students' evolving linguistic needs as the new Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards are implemented. Maria will demonstrate ways in which students' English language proficiency can be developed and supported in the context of content instruction. She will also shine a spotlight on the role of language in valid and appropriate assessments and discuss ways in which districts can support this collaboration and the policy work that supports English language learners.

She will be presenting in two 90 minute sessions #1116 (8:30-10 am) & #1216 (10:30-12 pm) on Friday morning, June 28, 2013 at the ASCD 2013 Conference on Teaching Excellence at National Harbor, Maryland.

The ELA work group discussed their developed unit. This seventh grade unit exemplifies the shifts necessary to help ELLs meet the new Common Core State Standards.

In this unit, ELLs and their classmates analyze a series of complex persuasive texts—a collection of historical and contemporary speeches and advertisements—and then produce texts of their own. Members of the ELA workgroup will host an hour-long webinar explaining how the unit works and why it matters.
