Martha Castellón leads presentation on Common Core with San Francisco Administrators

Friday, August 10, 2012

Executive Director Martha Castellón shared with over 150 San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) administrators the key shifts found in the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects. In addition to the key shifts found in these new Standards, she discussed the implications for district leaders and ways that schools and districts can support Common Core implementation for all students, especially English Language Learners.

The three key shifts that were discussed include:

  1. Regular practice with complext text and its vocabulary.

  2. Speaking and listening in order to work collaboratively and present ideas.

  3. Use of evidence from the text in reading, writing, and speaking.

These shifts are drawn from the paper written by Bunch, Kibler, and Pimentel (2012) and can be downloaded here.

Castellón's presentation was followed by Dr. Stanley Rabinowitz from WestEd who discussed the implications of the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium work on instruction and accountability.
