Kenji Hakuta and Jeff Zwiers recently posted an entry on the Alliance for Excellent Education’s “Core of the Matter” blog, focusing on academic language, equity, and the Common Core State Standards.
They describe three “under-realized principles” that they have encountered through their work with teachers of English Language Learners:
1) Language development in every lesson needs to be stronger;
2) All teachers are language teachers; and
3) Professional development for academic language development is not simple and cannot be addressed in random manner.
