As the country works to meet the needs of our diverse students, Understanding Language at Stanford University is sharing some professional learning resources that have been popular in the past. In response to several requests, we are making available for public use three online courses that focus on enhancing the capacity of educators (teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators) to plan, implement and reflect on high challenge/high support lessons that simultaneously develop their students’ content understandings, academic uses of language, and analytical skills.  

You can access any course via their individual URL listed below. We recommend that you start with the Constructive Classroom Conversations 2020 (Course 1) as it develops foundational skills and dispositions in educators. More information (and a link to each course’s URL) can be found below. 

Although these are asynchronous courses that you would complete on your own, we will be holding “discussion time” twice between now and June 30 during which participants can ask questions, share their learnings, and discuss implications for online instruction. Information for accessing those office hours is also listed with each course below.

Course 1: Constructive Classroom Conversations 2020

Course Description:

Most standards emphasize improving the quality of student-to-student conversation as a major feature of instruction. The new standards specifically describe the importance of students understanding the reasoning of others and engaging in meaningful conversations using evidence for claims. Common classroom teaching activities such as whole class discussions, jigsaws, and think-pair-shares can have the appearance of constructive interactions, but they often do not provide adequate opportunities for all students to engage in constructive back-and-forth dialog. This course looks closely at student conversations and addresses ways to improve students' abilities to engage in the types of interactions described in the new standards.

Course 2: Enhancing English Language Arts Curriculum for English Learners Using An Argumentation Lens

Course Description:

This course, developed for high school English Language Arts teachers, focuses on practical ways to enhance English learners’ argumentation skills. Participants draw upon their own lessons/units and bolster them to meet the needs and leverage the strengths of their English learners. It provides both practical strategies as well as a research-based framework. Participants will: 

Learn about UL’s Curriculum Enhancement principles and how to use them 
Analyze and enhance student conversations based on a text-based arguments 
Plan for, gather and analyze both oral and written arguments 
Create a number of enhanced lessons/units to share with peers

Course 3: Enhancing Mathematics Curriculum for English Learners with an Emphasis on Reasoning

Course Description:

The course, developed for secondary math teachers, focuses on enhancing math teaching with two key dimensions: strengthening mathematical reasoning and beefing up the quantity and quality of oral language used by students. In addition, participants will learn how to use formative assessment cycles to inform and adapt daily instruction.  While some new teaching strategies are introduced, there is a heavy emphasis on enhancing teachers’ existing activities and practices, with a particular emphasis on meeting the diverse needs of multilingual learners.
