Our team is currently developing sets of teaching resources that exemplify high-quality instruction for ELLs across three content areas. The resources will correspond to the widely-adopted Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics and to the Next Generation Science Standards.
Our latest creation is the Principles for the Design of Mathematics Curricula: Promoting Language and Content Development, a joint endeavor by Understanding Language and Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity (SCALE) at Stanford University. This framework provides guidance to mathematics teachers for recognizing and supporting students' language development processes in the context of mathematical sense making. While the framework can and should be used to support all students learning mathematics, it is particularly well-suited to meet the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students who are simultaneously learning mathematics while acquiring English.
